La Always Amartini continues to be impressive, winning the featured Fillies and Mares Open at Pompano Park Wednesday, Feb. 23.
Starting from post four in the petite field of five, La Always Amartini used early speed from the center of the track and moved into the lead before the quarter in :26.2. From there, she was able to catch a breather for driver Joseph Chindano Jr., setting middle fractions of :55.3 and 1:24.3 before picking the pace back up in the final turn.
Crisp Mane and David Miller were first over to challenge with Image of a Dream and Rick Plano getting a perfect two-hole trip. Both horses tried to overtake La Always Amartini in the stretch but she was too strong, winning by one and one-half lengths with a final quarter in :27.4. Image of a Dream, an Indiana sired daughter of Rockin Image, finished second over Ourlittlemiracle and Wally Hennessey for third.
La Always Amartini paid $4.20 for the win. The seven-year-old seasoned race mare is owned by Fox Racing Inc. of New York. Angie Coleman trains the Always a Virgin daughter, who was bred by Devon Slabach.
La Always Amartini earned her fourth win of 2022 in eight starts. She has 18 career wins in 153 career starts and has in excess of $300,000 in career earnings. She spent two of her years racing in Canada, but her best racing performances have been in the United States. She took her career best mark of 1:51.2 last year at the age of six at Plainridge.
La Always Amartini is from a pretty impressive family. She is the daughter of 100 percent producing mare Sapphire Martini, who took a mark of 1:53.3 during her career and was a stakes winner in Indiana. She is also the first foal of the great brood mare Topville Cyberwave, who is the dam of such greats like Radar Contact (1:49.2, $983,000) and Always About Katey (1:51.3, $849,000). Other foals of note include Topville Cadillac (1:50.2, $352,000) and La Diabla (1:51.3, $103,631).
With four foals of racing age from Sapphire Martini, all have records. La Rockin Sampson is the quickest with a mark of 1:51.1 and also a six-figure bankroll. The family has a two-year-old in 2022 named La Rockin Shania, who is a daughter of Rockin Image, that is currently in training.
